“Anyone who judges me harshly is, at best, a hypocrite sitting pretty. I’ve said it before: a person is only good as long as they can afford to be good.” Conceived as a reworking in dialogue with Brecht’s great epic, this monologue establishes a direct connection with the audience, who cannot help but think: “They’re talking to me, to me specifically.” It then feels as though they are meeting the real Anna Fierling, Brecht’s ‘Mother Courage’, with her provocative, ironic, contemptuous, cynical tone, and yet, suddenly, so tender.
