Taranto chiama (Taranto calling) is an investigative documentary filmed between 2016 and 2025 that reveals to the general public what is truly sustainable for human life. A journey from Trieste to Taranto that sheds light on what is happening in the city of the two seas, declared by the UN a ‘sacrifice zone’ due to the pollution from ILVA, the largest steel plant in Europe. While the news reports speak of a city caught between pollution and employment, in Taranto it is children who pay the highest price for the contamination. Against a unique natural and historical backdrop, mothers, doctors, artists, activists, entrepreneurs and even friars come together to restore beauty and justice to their land, challenging big industry and the State in an unequal struggle to (re) transform hell into paradise. Taranto chiama is a collective narrative based on scientific data that reveals the courage of those who, from the grassroots, are building – despite everything – a new model of development that transforms pain into beauty.
