On 12 September 1919, a detachment of around three hundred soldiers led by Gabriele D’Annunzio entered the northern Adriatic port city of Fiume/Rijeka, with the aim of annexing it to Italy. Over the following 16 months, during what is considered one of the most unique sieges of all time, its official photographic unit captured over 10,000 images. A century later, by ingeniously combining extraordinary archival images from the period with reenactments featuring the city’s current inhabitants, the Rijeka-based director Igor Bezinović brings to life in the public space of modern Rijeka a period in which the city experienced an unexpected transformation.
