Sándor Márai’s Bébi is a crescendo of subtle tensions within the microcosm of a secondary school. The protagonist is an anonymous, middle-aged teacher – solitary and meticulous – whose world is shaken by two pupils: Madár, a brilliant yet restless boy from the slums, and Bébi, a girl from a privileged background, aloof and reserved. The relationship between the three is marked by a rigid hierarchy, but beneath the surface lie unspoken desires and hidden rivalries. The narrative does not follow the facts, but rather the Professor’s perceptions, where reality and imagination become blurred. Bébi becomes light and mystery, Madár a disturbing presence. A monologue on the fragility of perception and the abyss of good intentions.
