Nine projects will be staged at MittelYoung from 24 to 27 June

Mittelfest turns thirty and looks at the new generation of artists from Central Europe to make the programme of MittelYoung: four days, from 24 to 27 June, to give voice to under-30 creativity with artists, companies and collectives strictly under the age of thirty, who will bring their own theatre, music and dance projects to Cividale del Friuli.

“The vision for the future of Mittelfest is clear-cut. – President Roberto Corciulo explained –  It has to become a cultural platform that, on one hand, connects the best of the Central European artistic landscape and, on the other, works continuously and in synergy with all regional stakeholders, including institutional and economic ones. Hence, Mittelfest will grow as a landmark for the cultural and tourist enhancement of our region. With MittelYoung the Festival takes a step further: its purpose is to bring to Cividale and empower a “new international artistic youth” after a year in which the live entertainment industry has suffered and is still suffering terribly.”

Thus, Mittelfest opens today the official call for artists and companies from Italy, Albania, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Estonia, Germany, Greece, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, North Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, the Netherlands, Poland, the Czech Republic, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland and Hungary. The deadline for applications is 31 March.

“Since 1991, for its first thirty years, Mittelfest has transformed Cividale del Friuli into an outpost where Western and Eastern Europe meet. It has brought together artists and audiences from the central countries of the Old Continent, the same countries that were divided into two blocks during the second half of the 20th century” – the artistic director Giacomo Pedini stated. “However, today at least one generation separates us from 1991: we live in a new century, the 21st century, and Mittelfest is faced with a different meaning of Mitteleuropa, a meaning that is still largely to be discovered.  This is why we decided to appeal to “the heirs and heiresses”, that is the new generation of artists who can give voice to a new European geography, both with their visions and with their physical presence, after more than a year of forced distancing.”

Applications will be examined by a group of under-30 curators appointed by Mittelfest in cooperation with some training institutions of Friuli Venezia Giulia: Associazione culturale Arearea, Civica Accademia d’Arte Drammatica Nico Pepe, Conservatorio Statale di Musica Giuseppe Tartini di Trieste, Conservatorio Statale di Musica Jacopo Tomadini di Udine, Fondazione Luigi Bon and, in addition, Associazione giovanile Robida, Convitto Nazionale Paolo Diacono, Teatro Club Udine – Palio Teatrale Studentesco, Scuola di Danza Erica Bront.

Under the coordination of Mittelfest artistic direction, 9 projects (3 theatre, 3 music, 3 dance) will be selected to make the programme of MittelYoung at the end of June.

Afterwards, the same group of curators together with the artistic direction will further select up to 3 projects among those 9 (1 theatre, 1 music, 1 dance) of the end-of-June programme, to be re-scheduled during Mittelfest Eredi (heirs/heiresses) from 27 August to 5 September.
