As old boxes full of photographs and film reels are sorted through, the landscape of memories from the border region between Slovenia and Italy—a region divided in the last century by war and political violence—gradually comes to light. The childhood memories of elderly people on both sides of the border have far more in common than what we were taught in history books, and they reveal a different perspective on this region. The film brings together the memories of the local population of different nationalities, using film and photographic documents to build the backdrop for a shared narrative of life during the Second World War, exactly 80 years after its end, at a time when fears of a new global conflict are resurfacing.
