The protagonist is an anonymous, middle-aged teacher \u2013 solitary and meticulous \u2013 whose world is shaken by two pupils: Mad\u00e1r, a brilliant yet restless boy from the slums, and B\u00e9bi, a girl from a privileged background, aloof and reserved. The relationship between the three is marked by a rigid hierarchy, but beneath the surface lie unspoken desires and hidden rivalries. The narrative does not follow the facts, but rather the Professor\u2019s perceptions, where reality and imagination become blurred. B\u00e9bi becomes light and mystery, Mad\u00e1r a disturbing presence.
