Ecphrasis: the challenge of those who want to recreate the magic of a painting in words. Great was the challenge taken by Mussorgsky, who chose to translate an exhibition by his friend Hartmann for piano. The suite’s fate was to be glorious, the composer’s tragic. Elia Cecino, from an idea for Mittelfest by Alexander Gadjiev, retraces the promenade, Mussorgsky’s fatal walk, with the Estampes by Debussy, always on the edge of ecphrasis, accompanied not by paintings, but by travel narratives voiced by Federica Fracassi. At the end, waiting for us like an inevitable mirage, the great gate to Kiev, already drawn by Hartmann and set to music by Mussorgsky.
