Held in Sala Sociale of SOMSI in Cividale del Friuli

October 1991: a few months after the outbreak of the conflict in the Balkans, a reception centre for refugees from the former Yugoslavia was opened in Cervignano del Friuli, a few kilometres from the Slovenian border. Between 1991 and 1997, the former Monte Pasubio barracks housed more than 1,500 people. The luckiest stayed only a few days, others for weeks, months, if not years. Finally, there are those who never left Friuli. Of that passage, the city today seems to have retained no trace, as if the community had wanted to hastily erase a difficult and complex chapter of its history. But the blanket of collective removal conceals personal stories and memories that have stood the test of time and oblivion. From their yarn resurfaces ‘the missing story’ of an extraordinary narrative about the utopia of encounter, at a time when Italy was beginning to face the challenge of a new mass phenomenon: immigration.
